Pterinochilus lugardi - Fort Hall Baboon (4-5cm)
The Tanzanian Blonde Baboon is a really lovely member of the Pterinochilus family, coming from East and Southern Africa, including Tanzania. They have a much paler, sandy colouring than the better-known OBT, with a subtle starburst pattern on the carapace. They reach around 12–14cm as adults and are a terrestrial, burrowing species that will happily create a network of silk around their hide. Give them plenty of substrate to dig into, a secure hide and enough anchor points for webbing.
Keep them around 22–26°C, with humidity around 50–60% and good ventilation.
They're quite happy with a predominantly dry setup, along with a water dish. Despite being from the same genus as the infamous OBT, P. lugardi is generally considered a little more laid-back. They can still be quick when disturbed, but give them some respect and they're a really fascinating species to watch settle into their enclosure. A gorgeous sandy-coloured baboon with loads of character — and a nice alternative if you fancy a Pterinochilus without quite so much orange
